The Silent Hill 2 remake is lurking in the shadows, poised and ready to rekindle the nightmares of 90s kids, the world over. With it’s fresh-out-of-the-box approach to horror video gaming, the original Silent Hill 2 was born in the infancy of the vast market of horror video games that we have all come to love.
In the days of yore, where “there be dragons” and people roamed the lands on horseback, “Silent Hill” was a noun that never failed to strike abject terror into the hearts of even the bravest of warriors. It was a franchise that was talked about in hushed whispers on the streets; a legend that was sang about by minstrels, accompanied by the melodic tones of lutes and drunken revellers in ramshackle taverns.
As with all legends, the Silent Hill franchise eventually found itself to be but a distant memory. That is until now. The boys and girls at Bloober Team have been working hard behind the scenes and have a Silent Hill 2 remake in the pipeline, and it’s set for an October release.
The Silent Hill 2 Remake will Follow the Same Story as the Original
Not wanting to stray too far from the beaten path, Bloober Team have stuck to the original storyline and will once again take us down the same rabbit hole. Following the familiar face of James Sunderland, Silent Hill 2 will take us through his harrowing ordeal and the events that take place in the sinister town of Silent Hill.
After receiving a letter from beyond the grave, apparently penned by his late wife, Mary, Jimmy S sets out to their old vacation haunt (pardon the pun), where they shared many happy memories before the resort met its cursed fate. Here we share in his plight as he searches the deadly town in a bid to find his dearly departed.
I’m thankful that Bloober Team have followed the age-old mantra of “if it isn’t broken, don’t try to fix it”. The original plot is a tried and tested formula that has held strong against the eroding tides of time. We have all seen what happens when storyline elements and events are drastically changed during the remaking of a classic (yes, I’m looking at you, Final Fantasy VII) and the results are, more often that not, far from pretty. When a fan puts good, hard-earned money into a remake, they are expecting exactly that and not a vague reimagining of a childhood favorite.
Bad News for Xbox Gamers as Silent Hill 2 Remake Platforms Revealed
Sadly, the Silent Hill 2 Remake will only be available on PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Windows when the game finally lands on October 8 of this year. However, it’s not all doom and gloom as it’s still very possible we will see an Xbox release date later down the line. After all, this is what happened with the original game back in 2001.
Silent Hill 2 – Summary
Despite the reoccurring nightmares and mental scarring, there has always been a place in my heart for the Silent Hill franchise. While there have been a magnitude of horror video games over the years, Silent Hill has always been the original to me. There’s no other horror game franchise that quite matches the brand of chills that the series offers and I doubt there ever will be.
A fresh lick of paint is just what the Silent Hill games needed to introduce a new audience to the franchise. However, my fingers are well and truly crossed that the remake doesn’t cater too much to the modern day gamer and keeps things simple.
