Fox Searchlight Pictures, one of the multiple award-winning film distribution branches of Fox Entertainment Group, has just announced that they have completed a deal with Academy Award winner, Guillermo del Toro to create a new horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genre label for them.
Within the press release, Fox Searchlight’s Presidents Stephen Gilula and Nancy Utley expounded on the new, as yet unnamed label and the role they foresee del Toro playing in its development. Since the success of their partnership with ‘The Shape of Water,’ del Toro feels he has found a trusting new venue for the creation, nurturing, and distribution of a wide range of smart, inventive live-action genre films.
With Fox Searchlight Pictures handling the financial, marketing, and distribution aspects of the new label’s films, it is anticipated that del Toro can turn his creative talents to producing and directing a whole new level of cinematographic artistry.
The first outing for the new label will be ‘Antlers,’ a movie based on the Nick Antosca short story ‘The Quiet Boy.’ Slated to be scripted by Antosca with the aid of Henry Chaisson; Scott Cooper has been given the Directors chair with production by del Toro, J. Miles Dale, and David Goyer, with Kevin Turen overseeing as Executive Producer.
Fox Searchlight Pictures has seen their films claim over fifteen Academy Awards since their beginnings in 1995 with their first release ‘The Brothers McMullen’ up through their latest triumph with ‘The Shape of Water.’ The new horror, sci-fi and fantasy label hopes with the new, more personal, direction of del Toro to elevate the genre to new plateaus of excitingly frightening cinema.
