‘The Boys’ Taps Veteran Karl Urban for Lead Role In New Series

Based on the ultra-violent superhero graphic novels by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, ‘The Boys’ is headed straight to Amazon. With Jack Quaid, Jesse T. Usher, Erin Moriarty, Antony Starr, Dominique McElligott, Chace Crawford, Nathan Mitchell and Karen Fukuhara already being cast in this dark drama, showrunner and head writer Eric Kripke has just announced Karl Urban will be cast in the lead role of Billy Butcher.

The versatile Urban is no stranger to comic-based stories having played Judge Dredd and most recently Skurge in ‘Thor: Ragnarok.’ Departing from the more amiable character of ‘Star Trek’s’ Dr. Leonard McCoy, Urban will be the leader of a group of mere mortal vigilantes dedicated to the containment or destruction of actual superheroes that they deem to have gone to the bad.

Speaking at the Middle East Film and Comic Con (MEFCC), Urban was quoted as being thrilled to work on the series, saying, “The show’s rather adult in nature but I think it’s going to be fun and edgy. It’s set in a world where superheroes exist but they are all very debauched and corrupt, and the idea of superheroes being good and altruistic is pretty much the last thing on their minds.”

Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen will be directing the pilot from Sony Pictures TV, with Amazon Studios and Neal H. Moritz’s studio-based Original Films producing.

  1. Karl Urban have always been a great actor. It’s not that much of a surprise why he got hand picked for a lead role in the movie. I have always been impressed by his works.
